- SpaceX is due to report third-quarter results on October 20, while families await eligibility and delivery details for the proposed gift.
Elon Musk said he plans to give one of his shares in Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: SPCX) to every child in America in 2027, a proposed gift worth about $10.5 billion using the latest official child-population estimate and Friday’s closing price.
The SpaceX chief executive made the pledge on X on October 19. His announcement set out an intention to transfer personal holdings, but did not specify who would qualify, how the shares would be delivered or when during next year the distribution would begin.
Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America.
This will be the first of many.
The proposal would give millions of households a small ownership interest in Musk’s aerospace, connectivity and AI business. It remains a pledge rather than a completed transfer or a program with published enrollment terms.
How the $10.5 Billion Estimate Adds Up
The Census Bureau’s latest estimates, released in June, put the population under 18 at 72,021,348 as of July 1, 2025. That is a demographic reference point, rather than a confirmed beneficiary count for Musk’s proposal.
SpaceX shares closed at $146.03 on October 16, according to Nasdaq data. Multiplying that price by the Census estimate gives approximately $10.52 billion. Using a rounded 72 million children produces a similar figure of $10.51 billion.
Those calculations describe the market value of the shares at a particular closing price. They do not establish a fixed dollar donation, and the value at any eventual distribution would move with SPCX’s price. The population and eligibility cutoff could also change the total number of shares required.
What the Promise Would Mean for Families
A single share would have represented about $146 of stock at Friday’s close, rather than a cash payment of that amount. Its subsequent value would depend on the company’s performance and market pricing; Musk’s announcement did not promise a guaranteed return.
The distinction between personal and corporate holdings also matters. If existing shares were transferred as described, ownership would pass from Musk to recipients without the transfer itself creating additional stock. The statement does not establish a company-funded cash giveaway or a new share issuance.
Practical questions remain open, including the age cutoff, residency or citizenship requirements, treatment of children born during 2027 and who would hold or administer shares for minors. Musk did not identify a distribution partner or explain whether parents would need to register. Those details will determine how a broad promise translates into an accessible benefit.
A Different Approach to Sharing Corporate Wealth
The pledge follows Anthropic’s October 18 announcement of a Public Benefit Fund. As we reported, the Claude developer plans to commit 5% of its shares, subject to shareholder approval, with possible additional allocations linked to valuation growth at the board’s discretion.
Anthropic’s fund announcement described potential donations to nonprofits or direct distributions to particular populations. It did not establish an automatic share transfer to every American child. Its vehicle would be a wholly owned limited liability company with governance details still to be disclosed.
The two proposals therefore take different routes. Musk is proposing individual ownership of his existing stock; Anthropic is setting aside company equity for a vehicle that could support several forms of public benefit. In each case, the value of a headline equity commitment needs to be distinguished from money or securities already received by households.
SPCX Investors Await the Next Earnings Update
The announcement also arrives ahead of SpaceX’s next financial disclosure. The company has scheduled third-quarter results for after the market closes on October 20, followed by a management webcast at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.
We previously reported on SPCX’s early-October rally above $175 and the investment demands of Starlink, launch systems and AI infrastructure. Friday’s lower closing price illustrates why the proposed gift’s value should be tied to a dated quote.
The earnings release will provide a separate test of SpaceX’s operating performance. For families watching Musk’s proposal, the next meaningful development would be specific eligibility and delivery terms that turn a personal commitment into an executable distribution.
