Key Notes

  • Denza could establish its own European car-financing operation as early as 2027, according to Bloomberg’s exclusive report.
  • The potential unit would help BYD’s premium brand compete with BMW and Mercedes-Benz through more competitive loan and leasing offers.
  • Denza is expanding its European model range and retail network, with the financing proposal still distinct from an operating business.

BYD Co. (HKEX: 1211) could establish a European car-financing operation for its premium Denza brand as early as 2027, adding a financial-services business to its challenge against the region’s established luxury automakers.

The potential move would give Denza greater scope to compete on leasing and loan payments, Bloomberg reported exclusively on October 13. It would put the brand into closer competition with BMW AG (XETRA: BMW) and Mercedes-Benz Group AG (XETRA: MBG), whose financing operations support vehicle sales and generate earnings of their own.

The distinction matters for buyers considering expensive cars. A lower monthly payment can influence the decision as much as the advertised purchase price. For BYD, building that capability would extend its European strategy beyond exporting vehicles and opening showrooms.

Monthly Payments Become Part of the Competition

Bloomberg cited the Z9GT sports wagon, priced at €142,000, as an example of the vehicles a Denza financing business could support. The report said leasing and financing account for most premium-car sales in Europe, making the structure of an offer central to winning customers.

A manufacturer-owned financing business, often called a captive finance unit, can coordinate credit and leasing products with the vehicles it wants to sell. That gives a carmaker another way to compete alongside equipment, performance and showroom service.

It also changes the economics of a sale. Lease pricing depends partly on what a vehicle is expected to be worth when the contract ends, alongside funding costs and the customer’s initial payment. Attractive terms can support demand, but they leave the financing provider exposed if resale values disappoint.

Denza’s reported timetable remains a possibility. A potential start next year should not be read as confirmation that its own European financing operation has already opened.

BMW and Mercedes Show the Scale of Auto Finance

BMW’s half-year results illustrate the size of the business Denza would be entering. Its Financial Services segment signed 866,088 new financing and leasing contracts in the first six months of 2026, up 5% from a year earlier, and generated approximately €1.01 billion in pretax profit.

Mercedes-Benz Financial Services reported €26.8 billion of new business over the same period. Its total contract volume stood at €131.6 billion at June 30, while second-quarter adjusted operating profit reached €492 million, up 70% year over year.

These are global figures, rather than a measure of the European market alone. They nevertheless show that automotive finance is a substantial business in its own right, with an established portfolio of customers and contracts for a newcomer to compete against.

For Denza, the opportunity would be to make its cars easier to acquire while retaining more of the customer relationship. The challenge would be building a loan and lease portfolio whose returns justify its funding costs and risks.

Denza Is Building Its European Retail Presence

The financing discussions come during the brand’s first year of European expansion. At its April global launch in Paris, Denza introduced the Z9GT and D9 DM-i as its first models for customers outside China.

The initial European rollout covered Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. Denza outlined plans for a presence in at least 30 countries and at least 150 retail stores by the end of 2026. Those figures were expansion targets, rather than a confirmed count of operating locations.

A more recent Austrian announcement provides an example of the local work under way. CCI Car Austria, a wholly owned subsidiary of the DENZEL Group, became Denza’s first official retail partner in the country. Z9GT presales are scheduled for November, followed by a Vienna Pioneer Store in December and an official market launch in January 2027.

A Broader Range Faces More Chinese Competition

Denza’s Paris lineup this month includes the Z9GT and D9, alongside the BAO 5 plug-in hybrid SUV and the electric Z supercar in Coupé, Spider and Racing versions. The motor show runs from October 12 to 18.

BYD is pursuing that expansion while other Chinese manufacturers broaden their European offerings. Geely brought three brands to the same show, as we reported, spanning mainstream, premium and luxury vehicles.

A financing arm could help Denza turn that wider product range into customer contracts. Its commercial value would depend on the terms it can offer and how well those terms hold up after funding costs, credit losses and vehicle depreciation.

The Next Test Is a Competitive Financing Offer

For investors, the significance is the potential addition of another tool to BYD’s European expansion. A premium vehicle and a retail network create access to customers; financing determines how many can afford the purchase on acceptable terms.

The next milestones would be a confirmed operating structure, launch markets and actual loan or lease offers. Those details will show whether Denza can match the monthly-payment proposition of established rivals while building a profitable business of its own.
