Novo Nordisk Partners With Anthropic to Accelerate Drug Discovery Using Claude

Novo Nordisk is partnering with Anthropic to deploy Claude Science and frontier AI models across drug discovery and software development as the pharmaceutical giant seeks to accelerate the creation of new medicines.

Novo Nordisk is joining forces with Anthropic to bring frontier artificial intelligence deeper into pharmaceutical research, using Claude Science and Anthropic’s AI models to accelerate drug discovery and development.

The companies announced the collaboration on September 16, saying they will work together on scientific challenges identified by Novo’s researchers and computational teams. The goal is to develop targeted AI solutions that improve biological reasoning, streamline research workflows and potentially shorten the path from early-stage discovery to new medicines.

Novo will initially test Claude Science on specific research and development workflows where the companies believe AI can have the greatest impact. Anthropic’s frontier models will also be deployed for AI-driven software development, giving the partnership a broader role in Novo’s technology infrastructure.

Claude Moves Deeper Into Pharmaceutical Research

Drug discovery is an increasingly important frontier for generative AI because pharmaceutical research involves enormous amounts of scientific literature, biological data and complex reasoning.

Novo and Anthropic plan to focus on specific problems rather than simply deploying a general-purpose chatbot across the company.

Scientists and computational teams at Novo will identify drug discovery challenges, while the companies will jointly develop AI-powered approaches designed around those workflows. That could allow researchers to use Claude to support biological reasoning and investigate complex questions around human biology and drug mechanisms.

Novo CEO Mike Doustdar said the partnership supports the company’s ambition to become the world’s most AI-driven healthcare company.

According to Doustdar, AI could increase R&D productivity and compress the journey from research to a marketed medicine while also opening new scientific opportunities.

The collaboration will operate under data-governance and human-oversight frameworks intended to ensure that AI systems are used in accordance with Novo’s ethical and compliance standards.

Novo Wants AI to Shorten Drug Development

For Novo, the agreement arrives as the pharmaceutical giant works to strengthen its research pipeline beyond its enormously successful diabetes and obesity treatments.

The company has made strengthening R&D one of its key priorities for 2026. Its current research portfolio spans obesity, diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases, with new data on semaglutide, CagriSema and next-generation amylin treatments among the programs receiving attention this year.

AI could become an increasingly important part of that strategy.

Traditional drug development can take many years and requires researchers to evaluate huge numbers of biological hypotheses and potential compounds before a medicine reaches patients. Frontier AI models capable of processing scientific information and assisting with complex reasoning could help researchers move through portions of that process more efficiently.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has argued that increasingly capable AI could dramatically accelerate biological and medical research. Under the Novo partnership, that thesis will now be tested inside one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical R&D organizations.

Anthropic Expands Beyond Traditional Enterprise AI

The agreement also gives Anthropic another opportunity to demonstrate that Claude can perform specialized work beyond conventional business applications.

Enterprise adoption of generative AI has largely focused on coding, document analysis, customer support and productivity. Scientific research represents a potentially much larger and more technically demanding market.

Claude Science is designed specifically around scientific workflows, and Novo will test the system on selected R&D problems before potentially expanding its use.

The partnership does not guarantee that AI-generated insights will produce successful medicines, and Novo emphasized that human oversight will remain part of the process.

Still, the collaboration illustrates how quickly frontier AI is moving into industries where successful applications can have consequences far beyond software productivity.

For Novo, Claude could become another tool for discovering and developing medicines faster. For Anthropic, the partnership provides a major test of whether frontier AI can deliver measurable value inside pharmaceutical research — one of the most complex and economically significant areas of modern science.
