Wall Street banking giant Citi will launch its new Custody+ platform later this year, marking one of its biggest moves yet into digital assets as institutional demand for cryptocurrency services continues to grow.

The service will initially support Bitcoin custody, allowing clients to safeguard digital assets alongside traditional securities through a single custody framework. Rather than managing crypto through separate infrastructure, institutional investors will be able to access both conventional and digital asset custody using the same platform.

Bringing Crypto Into Traditional Finance

Custody+ is designed to combine digital asset custody with Citi’s existing institutional asset servicing business.

The platform integrates custody, settlement, foreign exchange, cash management, and liquidity services, enabling clients to manage both traditional financial assets and cryptocurrencies within a unified operating environment. Citi says the infrastructure has been built around its common digital asset architecture, reflecting the increasing convergence of traditional finance and blockchain technology.

Bitcoin Comes First

Citi confirmed that Bitcoin will be the first cryptocurrency supported when the service goes live later this year.

Additional digital assets could be added over time, but the bank is initially focusing on institutional Bitcoin custody as demand from asset managers, hedge funds, and other professional investors continues to expand.

Wall Street’s Crypto Expansion Continues

Citi joins a growing list of major financial institutions expanding deeper into digital assets.

Rather than treating cryptocurrencies as a separate business, large banks are increasingly integrating crypto services into their existing institutional infrastructure. The approach allows clients to manage digital assets using the same reporting, compliance, and operational systems already used for equities, bonds, and other traditional investments.

Institutional Adoption Keeps Accelerating

The launch of Custody+ highlights how digital assets are becoming part of mainstream financial infrastructure.

Secure custody has long been viewed as one of the key requirements for broader institutional participation in cryptocurrency markets. By offering Bitcoin custody within its existing global custody network, Citi is lowering operational barriers for large investors seeking regulated exposure to digital assets.

As more global banks integrate crypto into their core platforms, the line between traditional finance and digital assets continues to narrow.
