Nvidia is backing financing for a massive OpenAI data center project in Ohio, deepening its commitment to the next phase of AI infrastructure as technology companies race to expand computing capacity. The project is expected to become one of the largest AI data center developments ever built and will be powered exclusively by Nvidia hardware.

The agreement includes up to $105 billion in financial guarantees supporting OpenAI’s long-term lease commitments, while Nvidia will also invest $1.5 billion in project developer SB Energy. The Ohio campus is expected to reach 8 gigawatts of computing capacity, with the first 800 megawatts scheduled to come online in 2028.

One of the Largest AI Infrastructure Projects Ever

The Ohio facility represents one of the most ambitious AI infrastructure investments announced to date.

OpenAI has signed a 20-year lease for the campus, which will ultimately support millions of AI workloads using Nvidia accelerators. The site is designed to provide enough computing capacity to train and operate future generations of frontier AI models while helping address the industry’s ongoing shortage of AI infrastructure.

The project is expected to become a cornerstone of OpenAI’s long-term computing strategy as demand for AI services continues to grow rapidly.

Nvidia Expands Beyond Chip Sales

The transaction also demonstrates how Nvidia is evolving beyond its traditional role as a semiconductor supplier.

Rather than simply selling GPUs, the company is increasingly helping customers finance the infrastructure needed to deploy them at scale. By supporting large AI projects financially, Nvidia strengthens long-term demand for its hardware while accelerating the construction of new AI computing capacity.

Management has argued that expanding AI infrastructure remains one of the industry’s biggest bottlenecks, making financing an increasingly important competitive advantage.

Massive Economic Impact

Construction of the Ohio campus is expected to create approximately 35,000 construction jobs and around 2,500 permanent positions once operations begin.

The project will also require major investments in electricity generation and transmission infrastructure to support its enormous power requirements, highlighting the growing relationship between AI development and energy investment.

AI Infrastructure Spending Continues to Accelerate

The announcement is another sign that investment in AI infrastructure continues to expand despite growing concerns over the sector’s enormous capital requirements.

Leading AI developers are committing hundreds of billions of dollars to secure long-term computing capacity, while companies such as Nvidia are becoming increasingly involved in both supplying hardware and enabling the financing required to build next-generation AI data centers.

For Nvidia, the Ohio project represents another strategic investment aimed at ensuring AI infrastructure expands quickly enough to support the industry’s next wave of growth.
