Tesla ($TSLA) has launched its purpose-built Cybercab on public roads in Austin, marking the first deployment of the company’s robotaxi without a steering wheel or pedals. Cybercab rides are initially available in limited areas of the city, expanding Tesla’s existing autonomous ride-hailing service beyond modified Model Y vehicles.

The two-seat Cybercab has no driver position or manual driving controls. Tesla relies primarily on cameras, neural networks and AI for autonomous navigation, avoiding the lidar systems used by several competing robotaxi operators. Remote assistance can be used when vehicles encounter situations they cannot resolve independently.
Tesla has also confirmed that Cybercab will receive Starlink connectivity, providing another communications layer for the autonomous fleet. The Austin rollout represents a major test of Tesla’s vision-first approach as the company works to scale Cybercab production and expand its Robotaxi network.
