Michael Burry Says AI Safety Warnings Are Hype Ahead of OpenAI and Anthropic IPOs

Michael Burry says AI safety warnings from OpenAI and Anthropic are exaggerated hype that helps sustain excitement as growth slows ahead of potential IPOs.

Michael Burry has accused OpenAI and Anthropic of exaggerating warnings about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence, arguing that the narrative helps maintain excitement around increasingly expensive AI models as growth begins to slow ahead of potential public listings.

Burry mocked the messaging as essentially, “We’re so awesome it might be dangerous,” suggesting that warnings about powerful AI systems double as marketing. He argues that portraying frontier models as potentially transformative or dangerous helps reinforce perceptions that the technology is advancing rapidly even as improvements become more incremental.

The criticism comes as OpenAI and Anthropic prepare for potential IPOs that could rank among the largest technology listings ever. Burry has repeatedly questioned AI valuations and spending, making the companies’ growth rates and ability to justify massive infrastructure investments central to his bearish thesis.
