Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, making one of its biggest acquisitions ever as the world’s dominant AI chipmaker expands aggressively into the software and developer infrastructure surrounding open artificial intelligence.
CEO Jensen Huang announced the agreement on Thursday, saying Nvidia intends to scale Hugging Face’s platform, strengthen its infrastructure and expand access to AI for developers and institutions worldwide.
The transaction includes approximately $11.9 billion for Hugging Face investors and an equity-based retention program worth up to $1 billion for employees who join Nvidia, according to Reuters.
The acquisition gives Nvidia control of one of the most influential platforms in the global AI developer ecosystem at a time when open-weight models are becoming an increasingly important part of the industry’s competitive landscape.
Hugging Face Has Become the Home of Open AI
Founded in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf, Hugging Face has evolved into a central hub where developers discover, share, evaluate and deploy AI models.
More than 18 million developers, researchers and creators currently use the platform, according to Nvidia. Hugging Face hosts more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications, while more than 200,000 companies use its services.
That enormous developer ecosystem makes Hugging Face strategically valuable to Nvidia far beyond the company’s immediate revenue.
Owning the platform could give Nvidia deeper visibility into how developers are using AI models and which technologies are gaining adoption, while allowing the company to integrate its infrastructure more closely with one of the industry’s most important development platforms.
Nvidia Promises Hugging Face Will Remain Open
One of the biggest questions surrounding the acquisition is whether Hugging Face will remain neutral after becoming part of the world’s largest AI chip company.
Huang explicitly said it would.
Hugging Face will continue supporting models from developers across the industry, as well as multiple cloud providers and accelerator platforms. Nvidia hardware will not be required to build or deploy models through Hugging Face.
That commitment is significant because Hugging Face’s value depends heavily on its role as an open platform rather than an ecosystem tied exclusively to one hardware provider.
Nvidia is already Hugging Face’s largest contributor of open models and data. The company says it has released more than 500 models and 250 open datasets through the platform.
Open Models Become a Strategic Battleground
The acquisition comes as open-weight AI models gain momentum globally.
Businesses looking to reduce the cost of deploying artificial intelligence are increasingly experimenting with models that can be downloaded, customized and operated on their own infrastructure.
Chinese developers including DeepSeek and Z.ai have emerged as particularly strong competitors, releasing models capable of challenging leading U.S. systems in areas such as coding while operating at lower costs.
At the same time, some of Nvidia’s largest customers – including Meta, Microsoft and OpenAI – are developing their own AI processors in an effort to reduce their dependence on Nvidia hardware.
Strengthening the open-model ecosystem could therefore help Nvidia generate demand from a much broader universe of AI developers.
Nvidia Expands Beyond the GPU
The Hugging Face acquisition underscores how Nvidia is evolving from a semiconductor supplier into a company spanning increasingly large portions of the AI technology stack.
Its GPUs remain the foundation of the business, but Nvidia has steadily expanded into networking, cloud infrastructure, AI models, robotics, software and developer tools.
Hugging Face adds something particularly valuable: direct access to a global community where millions of developers build and distribute AI applications.
For Nvidia, the $12.9 billion price tag represents a major bet that the future of artificial intelligence will not belong exclusively to closed systems operated by a handful of frontier laboratories.
If open models continue gaining adoption, owning the platform at the center of that ecosystem could give Nvidia another powerful position in the infrastructure underlying the global AI industry.
