Instagram has introduced a new AI-powered feature that allows public photos and Reels to be used for AI-generated images by default, giving other users the ability to generate visuals featuring your likeness unless you opt out.

The change is part of Meta’s broader rollout of its Muse Image model, which is integrated directly into Instagram. If your account is public, other users can reference your profile in Meta AI prompts, allowing the system to create new AI-generated images based on your publicly shared content. According to Meta, the feature is intended for creating personalized graphics, invitations, and other visual content.

Enabled by Default

The new setting is enabled automatically for eligible public accounts, meaning users must manually disable it if they do not want their content to be available for AI-generated creations.

Meta says users will not receive notifications when someone creates AI-generated content using their public Instagram photos. In addition, turning the feature off only prevents future AI generations – images that have already been created will not be removed.

The company notes that making an account private also prevents public photos from being used for this feature.

Privacy Debate

The update has sparked privacy concerns because participation is automatic rather than opt-in. Critics argue that many users may be unaware their public photos can now be incorporated into AI-generated content, particularly since Meta does not notify users when their likeness is used.

The feature also reflects a broader trend across the AI industry toward integrating generative AI directly into consumer platforms, with companies increasingly relying on default settings instead of requiring explicit consent for new AI capabilities.

The broader takeaway is that Instagram users with public accounts should review their privacy settings if they do not want their photos and Reels to be available for AI-generated images. Since the feature is enabled by default, opting out requires manual action.
