Apple’s Top MacBook Pro Costs $14,549, Near Used Corolla Prices

Apple’s most expensive hardware configuration for the new 16-inch touchscreen MacBook Pro totals $14,549 in its U.S. store. That puts the laptop in the price territory of some used 2020 Corollas, although the car comparison depends on trim, mileage and condition.

The selected configuration includes an M5 Max chip with an 18-core CPU and 40-core GPU, 128GB of unified memory, a 16TB SSD and nano-texture glass. It also includes the 140W power adapter; the quoted total covers the hardware rather than an AppleCare protection plan.

Storage accounts for a substantial share of the bill. Apple charges $7,000 to move this configuration from its included 2TB SSD to 16TB. Increasing unified memory from 48GB to 128GB adds $2,000, while nano-texture glass adds $150.

For comparison, CARFAX data show a $12,134–$19,007 price range for the 2020 Toyota Corolla L, with an average listed price of $15,232. The MacBook’s total falls within that range and slightly below the trim’s average, supporting an approximate comparison rather than a single nationwide car price.

The maximum configuration is far above the new laptops’ starting prices: $2,899 for the 14-inch model and $3,399 for the 16-inch version. As detailed in our launch coverage, preorders opened October 28, with deliveries and store availability beginning November 6.
