Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, according to multiple reports, marking one of the largest acquisitions in the company’s history and significantly expanding its presence beyond AI hardware into open-source software and developer infrastructure.
Hugging Face operates the world’s leading open-source AI platform, hosting millions of models, datasets, and developer tools used by researchers, startups, and large enterprises. The acquisition would give Nvidia control over one of the AI industry’s most important software ecosystems while strengthening its strategy around open-weight AI models.
Nvidia Expands Beyond Chips
The transaction represents another major step in Nvidia’s transformation from a semiconductor company into a full-stack AI platform provider.
In recent years, Nvidia has expanded aggressively into AI infrastructure, cloud services, robotics, software, and foundation models. Adding Hugging Face would provide direct access to one of the world’s largest AI developer communities and one of the most widely used repositories for open-source models.
Hugging Face Is Central to Open AI
Often described as the “GitHub of AI,” Hugging Face has become the primary destination for sharing, discovering, and deploying open AI models.
The platform hosts millions of model repositories and datasets while supporting developers building applications across natural language processing, computer vision, speech recognition, and generative AI. Roughly half of the Fortune 500 reportedly uses Hugging Face in some capacity.
Strengthening the Open-Source Ecosystem
The acquisition aligns with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s recent support for open AI models.
Rather than competing only through proprietary systems, Nvidia has increasingly positioned itself as a key infrastructure provider for both closed and open AI ecosystems. Owning Hugging Face would reinforce that strategy by combining the industry’s leading AI hardware platform with its largest open-model distribution network.
AI Competition Continues to Intensify
The deal also reflects the increasingly fierce competition across the AI industry.
As OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and Chinese AI developers continue investing heavily in frontier models, Nvidia is expanding its influence beyond computing hardware into the software platforms where developers build and distribute AI applications.
If completed, the acquisition would become one of the defining transactions of the AI era, giving Nvidia an even larger role across nearly every layer of the artificial intelligence ecosystem.
