OpenAI is exploring a Trail of Bits acquisition, The Information reported. Talks are preliminary; a price remains unknown.
Trail of Bits provides security research, software audits and tools for finding and fixing vulnerabilities. Its published audit reports include work on Uniswap, Aave and Worldcoin, giving it experience in blockchain systems as well as broader software infrastructure.
The companies launched Patch the Planet on June 22 as part of OpenAI’s Daybreak initiative. OpenAI models assist with security research, while Trail of Bits engineers validate findings, filter false positives, develop fixes and coordinate disclosure with maintainers. Participating projects include cURL, Python and Go.
In its June launch update, Trail of Bits reported hundreds of bugs discovered across 19 projects during the first week, with 64 proposed code changes and 37 already merged. The work included security fixes, testing improvements and other maintenance, so those figures do not represent hundreds of confirmed exploitable vulnerabilities.
A September review examined 186 Patch the Planet submissions that had been merged or closed by September 14; maintainers had merged 126 of them. That later dataset shows the collaboration continuing beyond its initial sprint. As we previously reported, OpenAI has also expanded the cybersecurity capabilities of its models.
