Cloudflare has opened the waitlist for Monetization Gateway, a new service designed to let developers charge for access to web pages, APIs, datasets, and AI tools without building their own payment infrastructure.
The system is built on the open x402 protocol, allowing AI agents or applications to automatically pay for protected resources before gaining access.
Built for AI-Native Payments
When an AI agent requests a protected resource, the server responds with an HTTP 402 Payment Required message containing pricing and payment details.
After the payment is completed, the request is retried with proof of payment and access is granted automatically.
The process eliminates the need for user accounts, API keys, or pre-existing commercial relationships between buyers and sellers.
Infrastructure for the AI Economy
Cloudflare handles payment verification and protects origin servers from excessive traffic, allowing developers to monetize digital resources with minimal operational overhead.
Payments are settled in stablecoins through the x402 protocol, enabling machine-to-machine transactions without requiring developers to build a dedicated payments stack.
The broader takeaway is that Cloudflare is positioning itself to power the emerging AI economy by providing infrastructure that allows autonomous agents to discover, purchase, and access online resources automatically.
