Shares of Reddit ($RDDT) surged about 11% in after-hours trading after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that the social media company will join the S&P 500 before the market opens on August 18, replacing AvalonBay Communities.

Reddit’s addition follows Equity Residential’s acquisition of AvalonBay Communities, which created a vacancy in the benchmark index. The inclusion makes Reddit only the second pure-play social media company in the S&P 500 after Meta.

The stock’s sharp rally reflects a common pattern following S&P 500 additions. Index-tracking mutual funds and ETFs that replicate the benchmark are required to purchase Reddit shares once the company officially enters the index, creating a wave of mechanical buying demand that often boosts newly added constituents.

The milestone comes just weeks after Reddit reported another strong quarterly performance, with revenue rising more than 60% year over year for the eighth consecutive quarter. While the company has recently warned that Google’s AI-powered search features are reducing referral traffic, investors viewed S&P 500 inclusion as a significant validation of Reddit’s growing importance in public markets.

Joining the S&P 500 is also expected to broaden Reddit’s shareholder base by attracting passive investment funds and institutional investors that benchmark against the index. Greater institutional ownership typically improves trading liquidity and can increase long-term demand for a company’s shares.

Despite the positive reaction, inclusion in the index does not change Reddit’s underlying business fundamentals. Investors will continue to monitor the company’s ability to sustain rapid revenue growth, expand advertising, and navigate changing search traffic dynamics as AI reshapes how users discover online content.
