NVIDIA Weighs $250 Billion Financing Backstop for OpenAI’s Mega Data Center Project

NVIDIA is reportedly discussing up to $250 billion in financing guarantees for OpenAI’s planned 10-gigawatt AI data center project in Ohio.

NVIDIA is reportedly in talks to provide up to $250 billion in financing guarantees for OpenAI as part of one of the largest artificial intelligence infrastructure projects ever proposed. The arrangement would help OpenAI secure financing for a massive 10-gigawatt AI data center campus being developed by SoftBank’s energy division in southern Ohio, according to reports.

Under the proposed structure, NVIDIA’s guarantees would support lease obligations and debt financing, making it easier for OpenAI to obtain favorable financing terms despite the enormous scale of the project. The guarantees would not cover the cost of NVIDIA’s AI chips, which are being negotiated separately in a potential agreement worth up to $350 billion. Combined, the infrastructure, financing, and hardware could push the project’s total value to more than $500 billion.

The Ohio facility is expected to become one of the world’s largest AI computing hubs, reflecting OpenAI’s strategy of securing dedicated computing capacity rather than relying exclusively on third-party cloud providers. The project would significantly expand the company’s long-term AI infrastructure as demand for model training and inference continues to accelerate.

The scale of the initiative has attracted interest from several of the technology industry’s biggest players. According to reports, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google have also expressed interest in utilizing capacity at the planned data center, underscoring the growing competition for large-scale AI computing resources.

For NVIDIA, the deal would further deepen its relationship with OpenAI while helping secure future demand for its AI hardware. Acting as a financial guarantor would also represent an unusual expansion of NVIDIA’s role in the AI ecosystem, moving beyond semiconductor design into facilitating financing for hyperscale infrastructure projects. The company has increasingly pursued strategic partnerships aimed at accelerating AI deployment as global spending on AI data centers continues to rise.

If completed, the financing package would rank among the largest ever assembled for a private technology infrastructure project and further demonstrate the unprecedented capital requirements of the AI industry. As companies race to build increasingly powerful AI models, access to electricity, computing capacity, and advanced semiconductors has become just as important as advances in software itself.
