A single Powerball ticket sold in Illinois has won the $1.04 billion jackpot, the largest Powerball prize awarded so far in 2026 and the eighth-largest jackpot in the game’s history. The winning ticket was purchased at a Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh gas station in Quincy, Illinois.
The winner has not been publicly identified. Under Illinois law, lottery winners of prizes exceeding $250,000 are allowed to remain anonymous, meaning the identity of the jackpot winner may never be disclosed.
The lucky ticket holder now faces a major financial decision. They can either receive the advertised $1.04 billion jackpot as an annuity paid in 30 graduated installments over 29 years, or choose a one-time cash payment of approximately $450.5 million before federal and state taxes. Historically, most jackpot winners opt for the lump-sum payment despite the lower headline amount.
The jackpot had rolled over for 44 consecutive drawings before finally being won, reflecting the extremely long odds of matching all six numbers. The probability of winning the Powerball jackpot remains approximately 1 in 292.2 million, making it one of the most difficult lottery prizes to claim.
While the billion-dollar prize attracts global attention, financial advisers generally recommend that major lottery winners first assemble a team of tax, legal, and wealth-management professionals before claiming the prize. Decisions involving taxes, estate planning, trusts, charitable giving, and investment strategy can have a greater long-term impact than the choice between the annuity and cash option itself.
The jackpot victory also serves as another reminder of the trade-off between life-changing rewards and extremely low winning probabilities. Although only one ticket claimed the grand prize, millions of other participants won smaller cash prizes during the drawing.
