Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Coinbase have launched a new payment infrastructure that allows AI agents to automatically purchase digital goods and services without direct human intervention. Built on Coinbase’s x402 protocol, the system enables AI agents to pay for content, datasets, APIs, software tools, and online services in real time, creating a machine-to-machine commerce layer for the internet.

The initiative is designed to help website owners, publishers, and service providers monetize interactions with autonomous AI systems. Rather than relying solely on subscriptions or advertising, businesses can charge AI agents directly for access to premium content, data feeds, research, and other digital resources. The launch comes as companies increasingly deploy AI agents capable of performing complex tasks independently, including research, analysis, and transaction execution.

The move could have significant implications for the digital economy. AWS powers a substantial share of global internet infrastructure, and broader adoption of agent-based payments could create new revenue streams for publishers while accelerating the emergence of autonomous online commerce. Industry participants view the development as an important step toward an internet where AI agents function as economic actors capable of discovering, purchasing, and consuming services on behalf of users and businesses.
