Uber Technologies announced a partnership with Lucid Group and Nuro to launch a robotaxi service in Houston beginning in 2027.
The service will combine Lucid’s electric vehicles with Nuro’s autonomous driving technology and will be available through the Uber platform.
The companies said the launch will initially focus on a premium robotaxi offering before expanding operations over time.
Uber Expands Autonomous Vehicle Strategy
The partnership represents one of Uber’s most significant autonomous vehicle initiatives to date as the company seeks to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing robotaxi market.
Lucid vehicles are expected to serve as the foundation of the fleet, while Nuro will provide the self-driving technology stack required for fully autonomous operations.
The move comes as competition intensifies among companies developing commercial autonomous transportation services.
Industry leaders including Waymo, Tesla, Zoox, and several Chinese operators are all racing to scale robotaxi networks across major cities.
Robotaxi Race Accelerates
Autonomous ride-hailing is increasingly viewed as one of the largest long-term opportunities in the transportation industry.
Supporters argue that self-driving fleets could significantly reduce operating costs while increasing vehicle utilization and accessibility.
The Houston deployment will serve as an important test of Uber’s strategy to partner with autonomous technology providers rather than develop a fully proprietary self-driving system.
The broader takeaway is that Uber is deepening its commitment to autonomous transportation as robotaxi competition accelerates and commercial deployments expand across the United States.
