Capital Gain

A capital gain is the increase in value realized when you sell an asset (such as stocks, real estate, or collectibles) for more than what you paid for it. For instance, if you bought shares for $1,000 and later sold them for $1,500, the $500 difference is your capital gain. Some capital gains are subject to taxes.
