X’s transparency feature exposed foreign political troll networks posing as Americans before the platform removed location data.

X’s newly introduced “About This Account” feature has revealed extensive networks of political accounts posing as American users but created abroad. The tool initially displayed the country where each profile was registered, allowing users to uncover clusters of pro-Trump and “patriotic” accounts originating from Nigeria, Eastern Europe, Bangladesh, and Thailand.

Many of the identified profiles appeared to be part of coordinated influence efforts or low-cost engagement farms operating for profit. The rapid discovery of these networks raised concerns about the platform’s ability to manage foreign interference and misinformation ahead of major political events.

Following widespread scrutiny, X removed the location indicator from the feature and added a disclaimer noting that VPNs and proxies could affect accuracy. The move has sparked debate over transparency versus security, as researchers call for clearer tools to track coordinated inauthentic activity.
