OpenAI is spending roughly $15 million per day to support free video generation on its Sora platform, highlighting the escalating cost of large-scale generative AI. The company is estimated to lose about $12 billion per quarter, with each 10-second Sora video costing around $1.30 to produce. Users are generating more than 11 million videos daily, largely driven by short-form content and meme creation.
The surge in AI workloads is spilling over into the broader hardware market. Memory prices have risen sharply, with RAM costs up more than 100% as manufacturers prioritize production for AI data centers over consumer PCs. Chipmakers have reallocated capacity toward AI-optimized components to meet demand from companies like OpenAI.
Analysts warn that the resulting supply imbalance could persist, pushing PC component prices higher and tightening availability for everyday users as AI infrastructure continues to scale aggressively.
