Apple’s board of directors has intensified internal preparations for a potential CEO transition this winter as Tim Cook weighs stepping down, according to people familiar with the discussions. While a final decision has not been made, the company is preparing for Cook’s departure after more than a decade leading the world’s most valuable technology firm. A successor is not expected to be named before Apple’s next earnings report in late January.

John Ternus, senior vice president of hardware engineering, is viewed internally as the leading candidate, though the board continues to evaluate multiple options. Ternus has overseen major product lines, including iPhone and Mac, and is seen as a continuity pick aligned with Apple’s long-term hardware strategy.

A leadership change at Apple would mark the company’s biggest executive shift since Cook succeeded Steve Jobs in 2011. Investors are watching closely, as CEO transitions at mega-cap tech firms can influence strategic direction, product cadence and market confidence.
